Microsoft, with the release of SharePoint 2010, has signficantly extened the life of the thousands of Access applications that have been developed over the years.
Building on the successful Excel Services and Infopath, SharePoint now allows users to develop and publish their Access applications to SharePoint.
For example, a departmental application, that until now required desktop installations, can now be published using the new Access Services functionality which capitalizes on the scaleability of a server-side application with one centrailzed version of the application rendered in a browser friendly format.
This technology is simple to use as you still develop the database, forms, and reports using the very familiar Access 2010 development environment. When you are ready to publish the application you point to the SharePoint site and the forms, database, and reports are then transformed into SharePoint friendly applications.
The Access 2010 hosts the new Office Ribbon interface making the super user/developer experience similar to all of the Office Products and also gives the ability to push the final product to SharePoint in a very quick way to deploy the application to the enterprise.
