One of the new Business Intelligence features of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 is the ability to Drill Down into Dynamics GP data from within the Microsoft Office Suite of Products. The new feature is called the Drill Down Builder and is a component of SmartList Builder.
This tool allows the user to create a drill down into any Dynamics GP or 3rd party product window. Within the Drill Down Builder, the user specifies which form (window) that they would like to Drill Down on.

Once the Drill Down ID has been specified, the user can create an Excel Report that shows all of the Open Sales Orders in the Dynamics GP system. Within Excel Report Builder, the users will specify which Drill Down Id that they would like to use within the report.

When the report is run, the user will be able to click on the drill down field and it will open up the Dynamics GP window that was selected when the drill down was created. Below you can see the Excel report showing open Sales Orders. By clicking on the order number, Sales Transaction Inquiry was opened and the user was able to view the Sales Order.

Here are some common usage scenarios where Drill Down Builder could be utilized:
1. Building reports within Excel Report Builder and including drill down Fields so users can drill down into any GP or 3rd party products window.
2. The shipping manager has requested information on four late shipments. Rather than sending a report with a bunch of order numbers, the user can copy the four past due shipments from the Excel report and paste them into an email. The Drill Down links for the selected order numbers will be copied into the email and when the shipping manager opens the message, all they have to do is click on the link and it will open the corresponding Dynamics GP window.

3. A user has configured a SQL Reporting Services (SRS) report for the credit manager. The credit manager is able to review the report and if necessary, can drill directly into the Customer Masterfile to change the credit limit for the customer.
4. The production manager reviews the daily labor transactions that were logged during his shift. An Excel report is created to show all of the labor transactions. If he needs to edit a transaction, he can click on the transaction within the Excel Spreadsheet and drill down into Dynamics GP and make the correction on the fly.
The Drill Down Builder is a great addition to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010. What would you like to drill down on within Microsoft Dynamics GP?
